Joan Maze joined the staff in the Center for Student Diversity at Towson University in July 2009 as the Director of African American Student Development.  As the director, she focuses primarily on the overall development and retention of TU’s African and African American students. In addition, she provides counseling, advising, training, and cultural programs through the African American Cultural Center.  Joan’s overall goal is to provide resources and coordinate activities that increase awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity for the entire campus community.

Prior to coming to Towson, Joan served as the Assistant Director for Multicultural and Leadership Programs in the Office of Student Activities at Western Illinois University (WIU).  At WIU, she earned the 2009 Excellence in Diversity Leadership Award for her work as an advocate for underrepresented populations and for the various multicultural programs she coordinated. Prior to her employment at WIU, Joan served as Assistant Director of Residential Life and Student Programs at Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri and before that she was Area Director at Southern Illinois University at  Edwardsville.  From 1997-99, Joan served as Area Coordinator at Lake Superior State University.

Additionally, Joan has been involved in a variety of professional organizations throughout her career including the Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I), the Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers (GLACUHO), and the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) where she served in numerous positions including the 2006-2007 National Showcase Selection Chair.  She is currently a member of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). She currently serves on the Integrated Programming Council (IPC) and is a member of the Student Affairs Council (SAC).

Joan earned a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Xavier University of Louisiana and a master’s degree in African American Studies from Temple University.
