Student Health Insurance

The University offers a group health insurance plan to all university and English Language Center students, the Towson Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). It works as a point-of-service plan with the Dowell Health Center (DHC), which acts as the student's primary care provider (PCP) while the student is at Towson. Covered services and medications dispensed at DHC are billed directly to the insurance plan with the student paying only a co-pay. Outside referrals to specialists, diagnostic testing facilities, etc. are covered at 80% if in-network providers are used and a referral is made by a DHC provider. Outside prescriptions filled in participating pharmacies are covered at 100% after a generic or brand-name co-pay. For more details, see the Student Health Insurance Plan below.

Insurance Requirement for International Students

International Students on F and J VISAS or any other temporary visas that are not employment-related are REQUIRED to carry health insurance by federal law and university policy. They will be enrolled automatically into the Towson Student Health Insurance Plan and the premium charge will be placed on their tuition account.

To obtain an exemption from enrollment in the Towson Student Health Insurance Plan, the student must file a waiver application their first term at Towson and every fall term thereafter documenting alternative insurance coverage that meets the University's minimum insurance standards. The waiver application must be filed by the deadline or will not be considered. Once the waiver is approved, the charge is removed from the student's bursar account. Insurance Requirements for Other Students

Intercollegiate athletes and students in certain health professional programs are required by their department to have health insurance. The Towson Student Health Insurance Plan will satisfy that insurance requirement.
