Mini Courses

The English Language Center offers short term courses for those who require specialized language training for employment or related special needs. These courses range from eight to 13 weeks and are designed to focus on a particular language skill. Au pairs, visiting professor spouses, or anyone in the community can enroll and benefit from these courses. Contact the ELC for specific course information and costs. To apply, legal residents and visitors on J, B, or H visas should complete the first two pages of the application.  F-1 students may take one of these classes in addition to their regular program courses.  Financial documents are not necessary.

Spring 2016 Semester Sessions


Tuesday Morning Semester Class February 9 to May 10, 2016 (9:00am to 12:00pm)
Thursday Evening Semester Class February 11 to May 12, 2016 (6:30pm to 9:30pm)
In the weekday semester sessions, you will practice your conversation skills, reading, writing, and listening. Learn about U.S. culture and history in the classroom and through field trips in Baltimore.


Fall 2015 Weekend Sessions


Dialogues on American Culture
  • Saturday to Sunday, September 26 - 27 (8:30am to 5:30pm)
  • Application Deadline: September 14
This weekend will cover aspects of American Culture such as the meaning of Labor Day plus a focus on current events in America depending on the interests of the students (immigration, civil unrest, the election, diversity). We will also discuss the millennials as an American and a global population.


Halloween Adventure
  • Saturday to Sunday, October 24 - 25 (Sat. 10am to 10pm & Sun 10am to 5pm)
  • Application Deadline: October 12
This weekend is completely focused on Halloween! The history, the excursion, the activities, and even a murder mystery by Edgar Allen Poe!


To earn a certificate of completion:

  • complete 16 hours of homework prior to beginning session dates
  • attend all 18 hours of class

If you are staying overnight, you can make a reservation at the Towson University Marriot Conference Center for $99 a night. Student must maek their own transportation arrangements to and from BWI Airport.



TOEFL Preparation Course

A 13 week course preparing students to take the paper-based and internet-based TOEFL test.

TOEFL Preparation classes are offered each semester. Class meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30PM to 9:30PM.

  • Fall 2015 Dates: September 8 to November 12, 2015
  • Spring 2016 Dates: February 2 to April 14, 2016
  • Summer 2016 Dates: June 7 to July 28, 2016

Paper-based TOEFL Exam

Each semester Towson ELC offers the Institutional TOEFL exam. This exam is only accepted at Towson University.

  • Fall 2015: Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 9:00am
  • Spring 2016: Saturday, May 30, 2016 at 9:00am
  • Summer 2016: Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 9:00am

Test Registration: $65

To Register, complete registration form and mail in the the $65 registration fee.


Accent Modification

This course will help reduce your accent and is ideal for business people, faculty, and students alike!  Classes are small and custom-tailored to meet individual needs.
