Applicants must be majors or minors in literature (any language).
Applicants must be enrolled in at least their fifth college
semester and have completed at least 12 semester credit hours of
literature.
Applicants must be in the upper 35% of their class in cumulative
GPA.
Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and at least a
3.5 in their literature classes.
Applicants must submit to the faculty advisor for LIT an initiation
paper, either creative writing or on a literary topic (a “very good”
to “excellent” paper previously written for a literature/writing
class would be a good choice).
Qualified applicants become members by paying a $20 membership fee
to the national LIT office.
Benefits of LIT Membership
Members receive a membership card, an
LIT decal, and a formal certificate of membership (signed by the
executive secretary and the national honorary president and suitable
for framing).
Members may purchase pins, badges, or
honor cords for an additional charge.
Members will receive a periodic
newsletter and the annual LIT Journal.
Members may submit manuscripts for
publication in LIT and try for one of the four monetary
publication prizes.
Members may apply for one of the several
$1,000 annual scholarships awarded by the national office.
Membership in LIT may be listed on one’s
resume, indicating outstanding accomplishment in a literature major
or minor to potential employers or graduate schools.
