Criteria for Application to LIT

(Lambda Iota Tau, international Honor Society for students of literature)

• Applicants must be majors or minors in literature (any language).

• Applicants must  be enrolled in at least their fifth college semester and have completed at least 12 semester credit hours of literature.

• Applicants must be in the upper 35% of their class in cumulative GPA.

• Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and at least a 3.5 in their literature classes.

• Applicants must submit to the faculty advisor for LIT an initiation paper, either creative writing or on a literary topic (a “very good” to “excellent” paper previously written for a literature/writing class would be a good choice).

Benefits of LIT Membership

• Members receive a membership card, an LIT decal, and a formal certificate of membership (signed by the executive secretary and the national honorary president and suitable for framing).

• Members may purchase pins, badges, or honor cords for an additional charge.

• Members will receive a periodic newsletter and the annual LIT Journal.

• Members may submit manuscripts for publication in LIT and try for one of the four monetary publication prizes.

• Members may apply for one of the several $1,000 annual scholarships awarded by the national office.

• Membership in LIT may be listed on one’s resume, indicating outstanding accomplishment in a literature major or minor to potential employers or graduate schools.
