Accessible school has raised the bar

As part of the Examiner's college series, reporter Megan McIlroy spoke with President Robert L. Caret about how TU's admission standards are more rigorous now than a decade ago. In an accompanying question-and-answer feature, Caret observed that by admitting a student cohort with "roughly a 3.5-plus GPA and approaching an 1,100 SAT," TU is "no longer your typical accessible public university. It's tough on the public, and more [state institutions] are becoming like that."

Teacher jazzes up music scene

Lisa Goldberg wrote a profile on how saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk, Department of Music, is creating a community of local jazz aficionados through his classes at TU, master class ensembles, performances, private lessons and summer jazz campus for adults. "He created an environment for them to play," said jazz trumpeter and colleague David Ballou. "A lot of musicians ... do their thing and expect people to come to them. He's reaching out to people."

Md. not ready for base relocation, report says

Daraius Irani, director of applied economics at RESI, spoke with Liz Bowie about the institute's analysis showing that Maryland will have a shortage of residents to fill high-paying technical jobs after the national military base realignment takes place in five years. "The level of education has to go up to meet the needs," said Irani, who presented his report to the state school board. "As a state we are facing a challenge that begins in elementary school."
