City schools to transfer 49 teachers

Brent Jones reported on a city school system plan to transfer 49 teachers out of five academically troubled elementary/middle schools, despite objections from the Baltimore Teachers Union. Last week, the state school board gave preliminary approval to a plan allowing TU to run three Cherry Hill schools: Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Arundel and Cherry Hill elementary/middle schools. TU runs Morell Park and is scheduled to manage another Cherry Hill School, Patapsco Elementary/Middle.
State colleges move toward privately financed dorms

James Sheehan, vice president for Administration and Ffinance and chief fiscal officer, spoke with reporter Megan McIlroy about TU breaking ground on a new $39 million student housing complex that will be built and operated by a private developer. "We have a lot of needs... that will be addressed by us borrowing money ... and if we can build that housing component by partnership with someone who will bring money to the table ... it's advantageous," Sheehan said.

Richard Vatz, Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies, talked about persuasion in politics, public opinion polls and media bias for Viewpoints, a prerecorded public affairs radio program airing on more than 340 stations. He defined persuasion as "the struggle among competing sources to establish salience and meaning, or spin, for chosen audiences."
