Energy merger raises fresh concerns of corporate consolidation

Baltimore Examiner, May 3

George Georgiou, Department of Economics, was among the experts consulted by reporter Chet Dembeck for a story about Constellation Energy Group's pending merger with Florida-based FPL Group. Georgiou agreed with another academic expert who questioned the economic benefit of energy company mergers, adding, "The other side is that now they then control a larger power market and can set the prices."

Scene & Heard reporter Sloane Brown chatted up the guests at "A Funky Formal Affair," the April 22 official opening night for TU's renovated and expanded Center for the Arts. "The party wasn't just in one area," Brown observed."It was happening all over the building." President Robert L. Caret offered some thoughts on the center: "State buildings often don't have any character, texture or dimensionality," he said. "But this building has all of that."

Martha Joynt Kumar, Department of Political Science, spoke to Jeffrey Brown about President Bush's decision to replace White House press secretary Scott McClellan with conservative commentator Tony Snow. Calling the post "a tough job," Kumar pointed out that a press secretary has three constituents: the president, the White House staff and the press. "And you have to explain each to the other, and there is a great deal of suspicion from one to the other."
