What? Third Annual Wellness Center Silent Auction

When? Wednesday, May 31, 5 to 8 p.m. (final bids at 7 p.m.)

Where? Administration Building's 7720 Café

Why?This is a once-a-year chance to bid on a huge variety of donated goods: sports memorabilia, electronics, O's tickets, gift certificates and much, much more. Auction proceeds will help the center to purchase new exercise equipment and fund educational programming.

Teacher excels in art of education

The Sun, May 14

TU alumnus and award-winning art teacher Michael Bell spoke to Cassandra A. Fortin about his successes at Southern High School. Bell and two colleagues built the school's art program, and he also helped start a gifted and talented summer program and a spring student art show. Bell credits a TU graduate program with enabling him to build and strengthen the gifted visual arts program. "My time at Towson opened my eyes to a whole new way of teaching art," he said.

Stadium options examined

Wayne Edwards, Department of Athletics, is a member of a commission formed recently by the Maryland Stadium Authority to attract and retain events at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. Edwards told reporter Ron Snyder that the 30-member commission, composed of government, business and sports representatives, is needed to attract events and to serve as a point of contact for outside groups. "I see a lot of potential here," he told Snyder.

'We the People' seeks ExxonMobil boycott

Towson Times, May 10

John Hopkins, RESI, spoke to Bryan P. Sears about a local man's efforts to promote a June 1 ExxonMobil boycott, saying he does not believe such boycotts are effective. "The economists' view is that (if you boycott ExxonMobil) everyone is going to go to Shell or Texaco, and when they're out of gas, people will go back to Exxon," he said. He said long-term changes in driving habits would reduce demand, conserve fuel and could have the effect of lowering gas prices.
