Lena Ampadu, English, presented a paper, “The Many Faces of Motherhood in Toni Morrison’s Bluest Eye, Beloved, and Love, “ at the Heart’s Day Conference, held at Howard University, Washington, D.C., on Fri., Feb. 13. Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, whose writings were being celebrated, attended the conference.

Alan Britt, English, has been nominated for Pushcart Prize XXXIV: Best of Small Presses, an annual celebration of literary presses and authors to be published in November. His name was submitted by a member or members of the Pushcart Press Board of Contributing Editors.

Cook Library

Carrie Bertling, Albert S. Cook Library, was chosen by the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) to participate in a 10-month formal mentoring program. The program is designed to encourage and nurture current and future library leaders and to develop and promote outstanding leasership and management practices. LLAMA is a division of the American Library Association.

Fisher College of Science and Mathematics

Chuck Dierbach and Harry Hochheiser, Computer and Information Sciences, (with Chris Ariza, Music) conducted a workshop on “Computational Thinking in the General Education Curriculum” on Fri., Jan. 16. A group of 15 faculty members from various departments and colleges on campus met in the Center for the Arts to discuss possibilities for creating new courses in the context of an NSF-funded project.

Gail Kaplan, Mathematics, spoke at the Joint Mathematics Meetings held in Washington, D.C., Jan. 5– 8. Her presentation, “The Aha! Experience in AP Calculus: Projects Designed for a Stimulating Journey on a Road of Discovery” was part of "Teaching Calculus in High School: Ideas that Work" session.
