Campuswide/Interdisciplinary

Sam Collins, Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, Jerry Jerome, Kinesiology, Tina Kelleher, English, and Bill Kleinsasser, Music, have been named as Faculty Fellows on the NSF-funded campuswide project, "Piloting Pathways for Computational Thinking in a General Education Curriculum."

Paz Galupo, Academic Affairs/Psychology; Santiago Solis, Center for Student Diversity; and Judith Guerrero, Early Childhood Education, founded a community-outreach program, Juguemos Juntos, that is the subject of an article published in the April issue of Baltimore Magazine.

College of Education

Stephen Mogge, Educational Technology and Literacy, Nancy Shelton, UMBC and Morna McDermott, Elementary Education presented Curriculum Unfolding: From "Us and Them" Toward a "Generous" Re-Examination of Immigrant Experiences at the 30th Annual Ethnography Conference in Philadelphia.

College of Liberal Arts

Tony Campbell, Political Science, had his blog listed with the “Best of the Blogs” on Real Clear Politics.com's Best of the Blogs on March 12.

Edwin Duncan, English, has an article, “Reaching Out: The Web as a Learning Tool,” in the current (Fall 2008) issue of Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Teaching, 15:2, 37-48.

Evangeline Wheeler, Maggie Faulkner and Jean Ayers, Psychology, presented a poster, “The Effect of Companion Animals on Autonomic Responses After Exposure to a Social Threat,” at the Eastern Psychological Association conference on March 6 in Pittsburgh. This is the fourth poster in a series of poster presentations since 2006 that reflects their most recent research findings about the effect of companion animals on the reduction of physiological stress as measured by salivary cortisol, heart rate, blood pressure and trait anxiety.

College of Fine Arts and Communication

Peter Lev, Electronic Media and Film, has won an Academy Film Scholars Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The award, conferred by the Academy’s Institutional Grants Committee, provides monetary support of $25,000 to aid in the research and writing of a work of film history, theory or criticism. Lev’s project is a history of Twentieth Century-Fox during the three decades that the studio was led by Darryl Zanuck and Spyros Skouras. Lev and Anne Friedberg of USC (the other award winner for 2008-2009) will be honored at a luncheon in Los Angeles on Apr. 20.

Fisher College of Science and Mathematics

Gail Kaplan, Mathematics, has been selected by The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) to serve a two year term on The Anneli Lax Ne Mathematical Library Editorial Board. The MAA also selected Kaplan for a two- year term on Edyth May Sliffe Awards Committee . Both appointments began in January 2009.

Siddharth Kaza, Computer and Information Sciences, is the author of a paper, “Identifying Significant Social-network Link Formation Facilitators: A Study of Dark Networks” (along with Daning Hu and Hsinchun Chen) that was accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology (JASIST), 60(2), 1-11.
