Faculty: Service-learning opportunities abound


Be sure to take advantage of the variety of service-learning initiatives benig offered this spring. Highlighted below are four opportunities for faculty members to get involved in service-learning during this term and the 2009-2010 academic year.

I. Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Luncheon Forum

Mon., March 30, noon--1:45 p.m.
Chesapeake Rooms I & II, University Union

This panel-style forum will feature the 2008-2009 Service-Learning Faculty Fellows. Panelists will share information about innovative service-learning courses that were developed for a variety of disciplines. They will also discuss TU's Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program and options for faculty to apply to the program for the 2009-2010 academic year. Lunch will be provided. II. The Pedagogy of Service-Learning: How to make an Impact in the Community

Mon., April 6,  noon–1:30 p.m.
Chesapeake II, University Union

Richard Riegelman, founding dean of the School of Public Health and Health Services, George Washington University, will give an interactive and engaging lecture about service-learning as a practical pedagogy. Dr. Riegelman has extensive experience using service-learning to enhance student learning and to positively impact communities. He will draw upon his experiences practicing and teaching in the public health sector to facilitate an interactive discussion about service-learning in general. Lunch will be provided. III. Grant Funds Available: Service-Learning TU 2010 Grant Opportunity for Spring 2009

President Caret is funding this service-learning grant opoprtunity as part of the Towson University 2010 Strategic Plan, which calls for an increase in service-learning experiences for students. Faculty members are eligible to apply for grant money to support service-learning course activities. Professors may use these funds to “take a course to the next level” in regard to service-learning and to permit the class to engage in relevant activities it would otherwise be unable to complete.  IV. Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program, 2009-2010

The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows program provides support for TU faculty interested in creating a new service-learning course or incorporating a significant service-learning component into an existing course. TU faculty members in any discipline are eligible to apply. Selected Faculty Fellows are awarded a $1,000 stipend. Fellows meet once a month for assistance while developing and/or implementing their service-learning projects. Applicants may submit a Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 course. Proposals for the 2009-2010 academic year are due by Mon., April 27.
