Rodney Stump, Marketing, served on the dissertation committee of Umar Burki, at Molde University College in Molde, Norway. (Burki successfully completed that oral defense of his dissertation on Sept. 4.) Alan P. Marcus, Geography and Environmental Planning, was interviewed by journalist Carla Dórea Bartz for the August issue of Previdência Nacional, the Brazilian national magazine. Previdência Nacional is distributed to all of of Brazil's 5,263 municipalities (50,000 issues). The article is about fieldwork research conducted by Marcus on the plight of Brazilian immigrant returnees and the effects on place, and the complicity of local political/social elites with regard to negative outcomes of the migration process.

Fisher College of Science and Mathematics

Robert Hammell, Computer and Information Sciences, co-authored (with three AIT graduate students) a book chapter titled “Computational Intelligence for Information Technology Project Management” that was accepted for publication in the upcoming book Intelligent Systems in Operations: Models, Methods, and Applications from IGI Global.

Honi Bamberger, Mathematics, delivered two workshops on Aug. 19 at The Summit School, in Edgewater, Md. The first (for lower school teachers) was on “Differentiating Mathematics Instruction.” The second, for middle- and upper-school teachers, was on “Using Manipulative Materials to Introduce Algebraic Concepts.”

Jane Wolfson, Environmental Science and Studies, and Annie McMahon, TOPS program coordinator, created and organized the TOPS Summer Experience, which was held Aug. 16-22. Twenty-one incoming STEM majors who have been accepted into the TOPS program participated in intensive academic and community building activities. The academic work focused around the theme of “energy” and included faculty from PAGS, Biological Sciences, COSC, Chemistry and ENVS. Wolfson organized the faculty team and provided a lecture and exercises on climate change.
