It may not look green yet, but just wait. Workers recently installed native sedums—succulent plants that absorb water and go dormant during droughts—on parts of the College of Liberal Arts building roof. About half of the building's roof eventually will be covered in these wind- and frost-resistant plants. The green roof will reduce storm-water runoff, filter the storm water that does run off, reduce of the "urban heat island" effect and provide additional insulation.
