Dan McCarthy appointed to lead TU Foundation, Inc.

John Hayden III, Mary Shock, Bryan Thaler appointed officers of the foundation's board of directors

Daniel J. McCarthy, with more than 25 years experience in institutional advancement, has been named president of the board of directors of the TU Foundation, Inc.

He assumed the position on October 22.

Other appointed officers of the foundation are  John A. Hayden III, vice president; Mary Shock, secretary; and Bryan Thaler, treasurer.

McCarthy began his senior external relations career in 1978 as special assistant to the secretary of Public Safety in Maryland and as director of public affairs, where he earned regional and national recognition for creating and executing programs in support of public information and education, external relations, media relations and fundraising.

He served as vice president of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, Inc., and as executive director for Development Operations.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Maryland, McCarthy was executive vice president for Towson State University Foundation, Inc., as well as vice president for Institutional Advancement. 

A member of TU's Board of Visitors, McCarthy has also served as District II chair for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and of the National Advisory Board for Public Relations for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Additionally, he served as an accreditation team member for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. For seven years he was an adjunct faculty member of TU's Department of Communications, where he taught ethics, media law and public relations for not for profits.

John A. Hayden III is a partner resident in the Towson office of the Baltimore law firm of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, L.L.P.

Mary Shock is a member of the Towson University Board of Visitors and is the working chair of the Capital Campaign. She is also the secretary for the Baltimore County Public Schools Education Foundation.

Bryan Thaler is an Investment Counselor with the fee-only firm of Van Sant & Mewshaw, Inc., Registered Investment Advisors.
