Muhammad N. Masum, Economics, received a certificate from Afghanistan's minister of labor in appreciation for his contribution in drafting the country's national employment policy document. Masum presented "Draft National Employment Policy and Strategy for Afghanistan" at a national workshop in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 17.

College of Education

Stephen Mogge, Educational Technology and Literacy/Graduate Reading Program, has a new book, Confronting Intolerance: Critical Responsive Literacy Instruction with Adult Immigrants, that captures the experience of adult immigrants who are improving their English literacy while confronting an intolerant political culture. It examines recent immigration policy and the anti-immigrant fervor that has gripped the United States.

College of Fine Arts and Communication

Jim McFalls, Music, has been invited to serve as guest conductor of the U.S. Marine Band Jazz Orchestra in an all-Stan Kenton concert on May 31, 2009. The concert, to take place in the performing arts center at Northern Virginia Community College, will be open to the public.

Jennifer Ballengee, English, has an article, "Torture, Modern Experience, and Beauty in Poe's 'Pit and the Pendulum,'" in Modern Language Studies 38:1 (Summer 2008).
