Nikki Austin, Nursing, has been appointed nurse team leader of the 10th Medical Regiment of the Maryland Defense Force. MAJ (MD) Austin is a member of the Medical Reserve Corps that is jointly sponsored by TU, Baltimore County and the Maryland Defense Force.

College of Liberal Arts

Edwin Hirschman, History, had his book, Robert Knight: Reforming Editor in Victorian India, reviewed by Dileep Padgoankar, former editor at The Times of India, in the Business Standard on Nov. 13. Oxford University Press published Hirschman's historical biography this fall.

Linda Mahin, English, recently participated in two sessions at  the Association for Business Communication 73rd Annual Convention. "Strategic Business Communication: A Reflection of Critical Thinking in the Classroom and the Workplace," in Lake Tahoe, Nev., Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The first session, which Mahin organized, is "Intertextuality -- Business Communication and Other Disciplines." The second session, hosted by Dr. Dan Dieterich of University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, was titled, "My Favorite Assignment." This two-hour session involved 19 participants who are working on an joint article for Business Communication Quarterly

Carol Quinn, English, had two poems, "Afterimage" and "Spinning Wheel," accepted for publication in The Cincinnati Review.

Fisher College of Science and Mathematics

Alexei Kolesnikov, Mathematics, had his joint paper with J. Baldwin and S. Shelah, “The Amalgamation Spectrum,” accepted for publication in the Journal of Symbolic Logic.

Alex Storrs, Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences, gave a public planetarium show, “The Great Planet Debate,” in September. About 40 people attended.

Marius Zimand. Computer and Information Sciences, gave a talk titled “Increasing the expansion of pseudo-random generators” in the Computational Complexity Seminar at the University of Maryland, College Park on Oct. 1.
