Computing, Sciences, and Mathematics in College

Computing, Sciences, and Mathematics in College (CoSMIC) is an extension of a previous scholarship program under the NSF S-STEM program. The program is open to undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science; Information Systems; Information Technology; Mathematics; or Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics (MB3).

The primary goal of the program is to increase awareness and access to these programs and the career opportunities they provide. We aim to increase the probability of retention and persistence in these target areas of science, mathematics, and computing. A secondary goal is to increase the number of students in the programs who become aware of the interdisciplinary nature of mathematics, computing and the sciences. In addition to the variety of activities offered, we will expect all CoSMiC scholars will enroll in a one-unit interdisciplinary course that explores careers and opportunities in science, technology, and mathematics.

Specific objectives of the project are to:

Provide scholarships of up to $5000 per year for undergraduate students in the selected STEM disciplines with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Increase the number of citizen and permanent resident students majoring in our selected STEM disciplines, with particular attention to the recruitment of minorities and women.
Increase the number and quality of graduates in our selected STEM disciplines.
Provide a support mechanism to the students in order to facilitate their success by emphasizing persistence and improvement for retention.
Inform students of the nature of careers and preparation for careers in STEM disciplines by exposing them to a variety of accessible interdisciplinary experiences.
