2009 FCSM EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Ryan Casey

Our recipient of the Excellence in Scholarship Award earned a Ph.D. in the 20th century from a public university south of the Mason-Dixon Line.  This was followed by a Post-Doc at the same institution before settling in here at Towson University.  Our recipient is on the usual number of departmental committees that are needed for the smooth operation of any department, and has served on several College committees.

Since arriving at Towson, this faculty member has:

  • published 11 papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals,
  • been the principal investigator or Co-PI on grants totaling over one million dollars, including some from highly competitive NSF programs and
  • co-authored over 50 oral or poster presentations at regional, national and international conferences – most of which had student co-authors.

One nominator wrote “A researcher who is tireless in the development of increasingly more sophisticated questions in the field, and who has the ability to identify key issues and frame testable hypotheses.”

Our recipient’s scholarly excellence also enriches the learning experiences of our students, both as an excellent classroom teacher and as an outstanding mentor to undergraduate and graduate students in their own research programs.  This success was one of the reasons that a Research Experience for Undergraduates Program was awarded to our College.

However this person is not limited to scholarly pursuits in one specialty, but has broadened the scope of his scholarly work to include collaborations with several other departments in our college.  Nomination letters were received from three different departments representing at least four areas of knowledge.  While trained in the 20th Century, the awardee exemplifies the 21st Century scientist by remaining true to the original area of expertise, while simultaneously venturing out across disciplines to foster collaborations.  Specifically, several of the nominators wrote glowingly of our recipient’s contribution to the formation and continued success of Towson’s Urban Environmental Biogeochemistry Laboratory.

It is a great pleasure to introduce our 2009 recipient of the Excellence in Scholarship Award, Dr. Ryan Casey of the Department of Chemistry.

(As presented at the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics Forum on October 30, 2009.)
