2009 FCSM UNIVERSITY & PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

Our recipient of the University and Professional Service Award has been at Towson University for many years. After having earned B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees and doing a Post-Doc all on the west coast of North America, this person trekked across the country to join the faculty at Towson University. While this award is for service, this faculty member is also an accomplished teacher and researcher, having authored or co‑authored twelve refereed publications that appeared in some of the best journals in the field. The list of articles he or she has been asked to review exceeds 50. The breadth of courses taught is impressive; including GenEd courses for non‑majors, lower and upper level courses in the discipline, and the important capstone course in the major.
As this is the University and Professional Service Award, the nomination letters concentrated on service contributions. During the past 20 years, this faculty member has served on many of the department’s most important and productive committees; and, at one time or another, has chaired most of these committees. To name just a few; our awardee has served on the departmental Assessment, Promotion and Tenure, Curriculum, Program Review, Elections, Colloquium, Honors, Faculty Search, Capstone Course and Executive Committees; and has chaired many of these committees. The nomination letters consistently describe his role as being crucial, most important, a monumental undertaking, and a selfless sacrifice of time and energy. As a result of our recipient’s role as Assessment Coordinator, the department has always been awarded a “Best Practices in the Use of Assessment Results for the Major” certificate from the University.
This person has served the College as well. As a member of its Promotion and Tenure Committee “he served with characteristic advocacy for fairness and lack of prejudice.” He also was a member of and the chair of the FCSM Curriculum Committee.
The University also has benefited from this person’s contributions including, but not limited to, the University Majors Assessment Resource Subcommittee, the University Assessment Council, the University Graduate Committee, and the University Affirmative Action Committee.
Beyond the University, this year’s awardee has been a member of the Arrangements Committee for several national professional meetings, and has been the coordinator of an annual statewide competition for Maryland high school students.
I am delighted to introduce Dr. John Chollet of the Department of Mathematics as our recipient of the University and Professional Service Award for 2009.
