Jess & Mildred Fisher College of Science & Mathematics

Dr. Jennifer Scott and Dean david Vanko The recipient of the Business and Community Outreach Award has been at Towson University for less than eight years, and in that short time has been able to forge strong partnerships with the outside community in a manner that has earned her widespread respect both inside and outside Towson. The awardee's efforts have been focused on benefitting K-9 teachers and students in Maryland, with a focus on Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County and Prince Georges County Public School Systems.

The awardee has directly impacted over 4,000 students, faculty and staff. The program she co-directs serves to promote active learning in science classrooms; offers scientist role models for students; and provides professional development for teachers. Additionally she participates in outreach to the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland and public shows in the Watson-King Planetarium and the portable planetarium.

Through her work as Co-PI for the Project ASTRO program she has forged partnerships between TU, the Maryland Science Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute and serves to link professional and amateur astronomers with K-9 teachers and students for inquiry-based activities in the classroom.

Her passion for what she does is clear. One nomination letter indicated that "her efforts have helped develop partnerships, provide valuable STEM content and increase the competence of local educators to bring the subject matter back to their classrooms." Another letter stated that "Through her efforts, learners of all ages have a greater understanding and appreciation of the universe, and the science that helps us understand how it works."

The awardee received a B.S. in Physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Arizona and then did post-doctoral work at the Space Telescope Science Institute and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center before joining the TU faculty in 2006.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jennifer Scott from the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences.
