Dr. Tom Krause and Dean David Vanko The first recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award came to Towson University about 37 years ago and in that time has proven himself to be an excellent teacher.

Over the years, he has taught a broad range of classes ranging from general education/core courses, introductory level course for majors and non-majors, upper level courses for majors and graduate courses for teachers. It was noted that over his career he has taught almost ALL of the courses offered in the department. He has also developed several of the lab course manuals and has served as an editor and contributor to one of the main textbooks used in the department.

The six letters of nomination all describe the recipient as the BEST teacher in the department. He is always willing to serve as a teaching mentor to colleagues. One letter indicated that 'his guidance was invaluable when they started teaching and continues to be now.'

The awardee also has been consistently involved with mentoring undergraduate students, over 30 students in all, through independent study, directed readings and capstone project courses.

Qualitative comments from students indicate that the awardee ranged from being a "great professor," an "excellent professor," and the ultimate accolade—"an awesome professor." One student indicated that they had the privilege of having the awardee for four consecutive semesters and that "his teaching style, logical and clear, was easy to follow and made learning the strong foundations a breeze!" they went on to say that although they would come to the recipient with an immense amount of questions-"never once was he unable or unwilling to answer my questions." "One day, I hope to become as knowledgeable and approachable a professor as he is."

The awardee received his B.S. degree in Physics from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Please join me in offering congratulations to Dr. Thomas Krause from the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geosciences.
