MATH 273 Calculus I (4) *** (optional depending upon goals and professional school
requirements)
Application to professional school for entrance one year from the following September
* Consult Medical School Admissions Requirements published by AAMC or Dental Admissions Requirements published by AADS.
** To be selected after consultation with your adviser.
*** A background in college algebra and trigonometry is assumed.
Variations in student background and goals may require modification of the curriculum. After consultation with an adviser, qualified post-baccalaureate students may substitute other undergraduate science courses for those listed. The offerings of the departments of biology, chemistry and physics provide many challenging options. Following application to professional school, you will have a year to wait before entrance. This is referred to as the "glide year" and may be used for additional study, employment, travel or some combination of these endeavors. Also during this time, secondary applications for professional school will be completed and professional school interviews held. For students hoping to expand their science background, a broad range of science courses is available, many of which provide excellent, additional background for medical or dental programs. These courses include such offerings as:
Analytical Chemistry
Animal Embryology
Electron Microscopy
Genetics
Histology
Lasers and Holography
Mechanics
Medical Microbiology
Optics
Physical Chemistry
Virology
To retain eligibility for financial aid during the glide year, the post-baccalaureate student must continue to carry a full load of course work selected in consultation with an academic adviser.
Flexibility
Although the program is designed to be completed in 12 to 14 months and many professional school seem to prefer this concentrated approach, the Post-baccalaureate Premedical/Predental Program at TU offers flexibility to those students who need more time to complete the curriculum. Courses required in the curriculum are usually offered during the summer and evening as well as in the full-time day program.
Students in the Post-baccalaureate Premedical/Predental Program who decide not to pursue medicine or dentistry have the option of remaining at Towson to complete a second bachelors degree. Such students would have completed some of the basic requirements for a major in biology, chemistry, mathematics, natural science or physics.
