Family and Human Services Major
A family and human services major can choose among four different tracks.
Human Services Track
The Human Services Track is designed for students who are interested in direct service and/or agency administration with families. Students may work in areas that address a wide range of issues that impact families in society. Likewise, students may work with a wide variety of populations across the lifespan. Students are given an opportunity for broad-based or focused study. 360 hours of internship experience are required.
Services to Children and Youth Track
The Services to Children and Youth Track has a primary focus on children and youth in the context of families and communities. This track is ideal for those who want to work with children but do not necessarily want to teach in the classroom. It provides students an opportunity to study children, incorporating the perspectives of multiple disciplines to enrich students’ understanding of issues that impact families and society. Students will have an opportunity for broad-based or focused study. 120 hours of internship experience are required. This track is often preferred by students who double major.
Child Life Track
The Child Life Track is designed to prepare students who want to become Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS). The goal of a child life specialist is to promote effective coping in children and their families who are undergoing stressful medical experiences. Child life specialists are most commonly employed in pediatric hospitals or in general hospitals with pediatric units. However, child life specialists can be employed in other venues such as bereavement services/hospices, doctor’s offices, dental offices, outpatient medical facilities, rehabilitation centers, pediatric long term care facilities, camps and day-care centers for medically fragile children.
Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector Track
The Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector Track is for students interested in leadership and administration of human service agencies. The curriculum for this track is interdisciplinary and draws from mass communication, marketing, cultural studies, and management. Students in this track may take an elective in one of the interdisciplinary fields of study. 360 hours of internship experience are required, with at least one experience focusing on leadership skills in the nonprofit sector.
