Directed Reading and Individual Study

Students may choose to do an individual reading or research course with a professor. Before registering for an individualized course, students must first get the consent of the professor with whom they would like to work. That professor will notify the department chair who will set up the course. Directed reading and research courses can be repeated for a maximum of 6 units each.

The primary difference between directed readings (GEOG 495/585) and Independent Study (GEOG 496/586) is that the former focuses on readings the literature on a selected topic while the second focusing on a selected research question.
