Towson University Wireless Network Changes

 

1.     What is changing with the wireless network?

There are two changes taking place to the wireless network.  The first change will be new wireless network names and the second is a new wireless guest login. 

2.     Why are these changes being implemented?

Towson University is adhering to changing state and federal requirements for open “guest” networks.   

3.     Who is affected by the changes to the Towson wireless network?

Everyone who uses the wireless network on campus is affected including faculty, staff, students, guests, and visitors.  

4.     What will be the new wireless network names?

tu-secure will replace TowsonUwireless
tu-guest
will replace TowsonUguest  

5.     When will the wireless names be changed?

You can begin to access tu-secure and tu-guest today.  The TowsonUguest name will be visible until September 15, 2010 and the TowsonUwireless name will be visible until October 27, 2010.  After September 15, 2010 TowsonUguest will only be available to those who already have it configured. January 3, 2011 both TowsonUguest and TowsonUwirless will no longer be accessible to anyone. 

6.     What is the difference between tu-secure and tu-guest?

Faculty, staff, and students should use the tu-secure network as this gives you secure access to other resources such as H: and O: drives. All university guests and visitors will need to use the tu-guest network; a guest login and password is required to use tu-guest, see details at http://www.towson.edu/guestnetwork

7.     What new functionality is available with the tu-guest network?

The tu-guest wireless network will allow most secure e-mail clients the ability to receive and send e-mail (including those on mobile devices), and allow VPN access to other networks.  Video chat protocols are currently not optimized for our wireless network and are not supported by OTS.   

8.     How does a guest access the internet?

All guests will need to use the tu-guest wireless network and have a faculty, staff, or student NetID (Towson Username) holder sponsor a guest account for them to obtain a GuestID’s. 

9.     How does my guest receive a GuestID?

All NetID (Towson Username) holders can sponsor a guest or the guest can visit one of the service desks (Faculty/Staff Help Center, Student Computing Services, Cook Library, University Union, and Administration Info desks) to obtain a GuestID. 

10.     How long will my session to tu-guest network be active?

You will be returned to the tu-guest login page 12 hours after you login and asked to re-enter your GuestID and password.

11.     How do faculty, staff and students  sponsor a guest?

 12.     What happens if a guest forgets their password?

Visit a service desk to get another account create or the original sponsor can look up the password.

13.     Can a guest account be created ahead of time?

Yes, accounts can be created up to 7 days in advance.

14.     Will frequent visitors get a new account each time they visit?

Yes, if their previous account has expired.

15.     If a guest leaves before the expiration of their account, does the account need to be deleted?

No, it will expire when it is set to be expired.

16.    What if several accounts are needed?

Bulk registration is also available (for conferences, group events, etc,) If you do not have the ability to create multiple guest accounts you will want to complete the Guest Account Request Form and e-mail the file to the individual in your area who can create multiple guest accounts. 17.  Can a guest account be created over the phone?

Yes, but we cannot give the password over the phone. They will need to get the password from the e-mail address they supply when the account is created. If the person is on campus they should be directed to the nearest service desk.

18.    Where are the service desks and campus reception areas located?

  • Student Computing Services in Cook Library, Room 35

  • Faculty/Staff Help Center in Cook Library Room 29

  • Administration Information Desk on the 1st Floor in the Administration Building

  • University Union Circulation Desk on the 2nd Floor in the Union

  • Cook Library Circulation Desk located in the Cook Library lobby on the 3rd Floor.

19.     Where can I view the tutorial to sponsor a guest  account?

20.     What type of identification is required on-campus for the service desks to create an account?

A valid driver’s license.

21.     Will the wireless network in the town of Towson be affected by this change?

No, the town of Towson’s public free wireless network will not be affected by this change.
