America is aging. Every day about 6,000 Americans celebrate their 65th birthdays. The aging population is expanding rapidly and will continue to do so well into the next millennium. Gerontology, the study of human aging, is an exciting and dynamic exploration that not only provides us with new insights into our own older family members and friends, but gives us a glimpse of our own futures as well.
The field of gerontology is changing, advancing and
increasingly becoming an important field for those interested in business, service, education and recreation as well as those interested in health and wellness.
Towson University started the undergraduate degree program in gerontology in 1998. The program was the first undergraduate degree program offered within the University System of Maryland and is one of 100 programs offered in the United States. Housed in the College of Health Professions, TU's Gerontology Program provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective on aging. The academic program provides the flexibility to pursue special interests within the broad field of gerontology. Students graduating with a baccalaureate degree in gerontology can elect to go on to graduate school to continue their gerontological studies or begin working in the field.
The graduate program in applied gerontology was established in 2000 to meet the educational needs of students currently working in the field of aging. This program leads to a Master of Science in Applied Gerontology, or a Graduate Certificate in Applied Gerontology.
