Health Care Management Major

Welcome!

There is no field more exciting to be in today than health care management!  Where else can you have a direct effect on people’s health, make a difference in an out-of-control economy, and have a great career?  You can make a difference by helping manage a hospital, a nursing home, an outpatient clinic, a continuing care retirement community, a physician practice, a national association, a federal agency, a local or state health department, a consulting firm, or one of a variety of other organizations.  You can make a difference by focusing in nursing, marketing, finance, operations, physician practice, public relations, fund raising, government relations, public health, strategic planning….the list is almost endless!

To further entice you, according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “…health care is one of the fastest growing career fields in the US.  The average entry-to-mid-level salary for health care management graduates with a bachelor’s degree is $32,000-$35,000, and people with master’s degrees and many years of experience can earn six-figure incomes” (Buchbinder and Thompson, 2009, p.2).  In their new book, Drs. Buchbinder and Thompson discuss career opportunities in the field of health care management, describing in detail a variety of work place options and positions as presented by current practitioners in the field.  If you’re still trying to decide if the major is right for you, I strongly suggest taking a look at their book, as it is the only one like it in publication at the moment.

Here are some further reasons why Health Care Management is a great major:
