There are some night and weekend hours. While we run normal work hours (8:30-4:30), no professional in our division holds to that schedule all the time. Sometimes our jobs require us to stay late and come in early. There is typically someone in our office from 7 am to 7 pm or later. Parking permits are required, and as of September 2009...are free.
Professional attire is required. Professional attire at a college is more relaxed than in most business settings. In order to be clear on expectations....Everyone is expected to dress in a way that would 1) set an example for our students as what would be expected in the health care community and 2) be appropriate if we were called to a meeting with the President of the college.
Any travel expenses are reimbursed at the federal recommended rate.

Our goal is to provide accessible, high quality primary care services, including health promotion and education, in a caring environment that respects students' dignity, diversity, and privacy.
Dept. Goals & Objectives
The overarching goal of the Department of Health Education and Promotion is to promote health and wellbeing via outreach activities and educational programs for the Towson University community. This goal is achieved through conducting classroom presentations, campus wide programs and events, online and social media communications and promotions, supporting the Dowell Health Center staff and through collaborations with other departments within Student Affairs and Academics.
Criminal Background Check: NO
How the organization will improve the health education student’s skills and knowledge
We would be able to provide a very diverse working experience for a student. The intern would have the opportunity to be involved in health education programs, educational campaigns and promotions on a variety of topics including smoking cessation, nutrition, alcohol and drug prevention and sexual health just to name a few. The intern may have the opportunity to work closely with students by conducting classes and/or seminars based on their skill level, helping to promote health center services and programs via social networking and the web in addition to being involved in the day to day operations of the Health Education and Promotion department. We feel that this would be a very comprehensive experience that would give a student the opportunity to expand their knowledge base in many content areas and develop a broad range of transferrable skills.
We would use the student’s skills and knowledge to help in the creation and implementation of programs to ensure that we are targeting student interest. A student can bring a relevance to program planning that professional staff are sometimes displaced from. Students are often more savvy with social networking capabilities so we would hope that they could help to educate staff.
Skills and qualifications required by intern at this location
We are looking for an intern that is self-motivated, organized, able to effectively multi-tasking and eager to work on a variety of projects in different content areas. We want someone that carries themselves professionally and who is able to take initiative and be actively involved in offering new ideas for programs or promotions. We would be looking for someone who is web savvy, familiar with social networking tools and who possess good communication and presentation skills. The intern would need to be comfortable having two supervisors and would preferably feel comfortable working with sexual health content such as sexual behavior, STI education and STI prevention.
Additional information
Parking should not be an issue, there is plenty of student parking in the Towsontown garage which is close to the Health Center. There may be need for night/weekend availability depending upon program requests we get that the intern may be involved with. Space is an issue at the Health Center so while we guarantee to provide a desk and computer the intern will have to be flexible and ok with the possibility of working in different areas on different days depending on the Health Center schedule.

How the organization will improve the health education student’s skills and knowledge
Interns work with the public giving tours and at special events. They will strengthen their skills in public speaking and relating to all ages. Interns also help with marketing, fundraising and evaluating. This provides interns with skills in project management and all aspects of crating successful public health programs
Skills and qualifications required by intern at this location
Interns must be mature, organized and willing to work hard. Not all assigned jobs will be glamorous but all need to be done. We will train interns to speak with the public but we do require enthusiasm and interest in doing so. Interns will have to relate to kids, adults, donors, teachers and University of Maryland administrators so flexibility and maturity are key.
Additional information
Parking can be a challenge on the university campus. We provide passes to park in the Baltimore Grand Garage but all other parking is at the intern’s own expense. The metro stop at Lexington Market is very close as is the University Center/Baltimore Street light rail stop. We recommend taking advantage of public transportation when possible but cannot reimburse for fare. Public programs and outreach most often take place on weekends and interns may be required to attend. A full internship would be a general museum internship that would cross all departments including education, development, marketing and curatorial.
