Political Cartoons and Covers

The Hand Has 5 Fingers

May 13, 1928
Heartfield supported the Communist party which was ‘List 5’ on the election ballot. This piece represented a slogan to support the number 5. This picture helps to show how Hearfield used his art to support his own political beliefs as well as to attack the Nazi party.

Die Arena

February/March 1927
This image of a dancing woman's legs was simply a good graphic for the magazine's cover. This is an excellent example of the advertising capabilities of photomontage.

Hurrah, the Butter is All Gone!

December 19, 1935
This image represents the importance of Germany’s military and weapons; more important than the citizens who need food. Instead, eat the iron.

Police Commissioner Zorgiebel

1929
This image shows Heartfield with Police Commissioner Zorgiebel. It was used as a political cartoon in Berlin's Arbeiter-Illustriect-Zerlung(AIZ)(The Woker's Illustrated Newspaper). It shows Heartfield's obvious dislike of a man who supported the Nazi Party.
