A Hunger Fantasy

George Grosz

George Grosz served as both an artistic inspiration, and life long friend to John Heartfield. In his youth, Grosz was formally trained in academies in both Berlin and Dresden. He was a skilled writer, painter and caricaturist. Much of Grosz's work demonstrates his ability to seamlessly blend together the techniques of both painting and caricature. Grosz joined the dada movement when he moved to Berlin in 1918. He contributed not only art to the movement, but edited several satirical magazines. Much of Groszs work during this time were paintings and sketches that satirically mocked society and industrialism.
