Heartfield's Influences on Modern Advertising

John Heartfield's art has had a profound effect on modern advertising. The idea of a photomontage is used on many ads printed in magazines today. Advertisers clip images together to show there product and it's importance. Do you want to see some examples of modern photomontage? Take a look at the ads below that show the use of Heartfield's style through the past two decades. The tree exemplifies Heartfield's style because it is two separate images which have been imposed to give one idea. Photomontage was used in the picture of the baby where the jeans are a separate image, added to the picture to convey the idea of an unborn child wearing jeans.

Contemporary Use of Dada Styles

Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh. By the time he had reached 59 years of age, Warhol had been working as an artist for nearly 40 years. His fame and influence was widespread. He is considered by many as the most influential American artists of the second half of the 20th century. Warhol's signaure style used commercial silk-screening techniques and collage to create identical, mass produced images on canvas, then variations in color to give each of his works a unique look. Warhol first applied his silk-screening techniques as a commercial artist in the 1950s. Window displays of a Fifth Avenue department store featured his comic book superhero images. His initial forays into the POP ART came in the early 1960s with his Coca-Cola Bottles (1962) and sculptures of Brillo Boxes (1964), which brought worldwide recognition. Condemned as consumerism by many critics, his work was enthusiastically accepted in Europe, Australia and Japan. Later in the 1960s, Warhol produced a series of motions pictures dealing with such concepts as time, boredom and repetition. Warhol also used some of Heartfield's signature photo montage. With this, he created works that will be remembered throughout history. Below are some of his famous pieces that were inspired by traditional dada style.
