1950 - 1959

Nationalism emerged as a powerful force during the 1950s. In Africa, the Middle East and Asia, nationalist groups sought to free their nations from the colonial rule of the British, French and Dutch. Many colonies did win independence. Throughout the post war period the United States and the Soviet Union competed for influence in the newly independent nations. By the 1950s, dictators had taken power in many Latin American countries. Latin Americans resented the dictatorial rule of their leaders and believed that the dictators had been installed to protect the investments of U.S. corporations.
