The Stage Manager Design Process

Jaime Simpson, Stage Manager

Simpson's definition of stage manager : "The stage manager serves many different roles; rehearsal coordinator, project manager, counselor, communicator, production nurse and administrator."

Simpson relys on her strong people skills to keep things running smoothly and efficiently. Simpson says, "I am the person who keeps everyone happy, healthy, safe and ON TIME for rehearsals." Simpson manages a wide range of responsibilities frrom running rehearsals efficiently, taking notes for the director, keeping track of blocking and staging, setting furniture up, arranging meetings to whatever else needs to be done.  

Simpson draws on her wide range of theatrical experience to support her role as stage manager. In adddition to her academic training in stage management, Simpson has worked as an actress, singer, dancer, musician and technical person.  Simpson says, "Having these many experiences to draw on makes me a well-rounded and an understanding stage manager."

As stage manager Simpson must be prepared to handle and resolve all types of unforeseen situations.  In addition to relying on her people skills, Simpson brings to all rehearsals her tool kit which includes a little bit of everything from pencils, pens to needle and thread. Simpson is also certifed in first aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

"A stage manager requires many different qualities and skills, being a people person, compassionate and sensitive without being a pushover is important," says Simpson.
