Dad - Today I am a citizen of the United States of America! I wish you could have been here. Uncle Wieland stood up for me. Next: I enlist in the U.S. Army and back to Europe to kick Nazi butt!

(Johnny appears with Tom’s letter in hand).

JOHNNY

Christ, if I were young again - ! Dear Tom...dear sone. I envy you. War is an abomination. But his war gives us a chance - a real opportunity - to change the world! I don’t expect Utopia anymore, but I can’t completely abandon hope.
