When Piscator turns to the audience and asks if Johnny should be allowed to hang the scenery, he is breaking a theatrical convention of the time. This act of addressing the audience directly is a radical device of Epic Theatre, as it forces the audience to interact with the performers. The audience is spoken to directly many times throughout this musical, most often by the actor playing Brecht.
