The song "We Can Change The World" provides an excellent example of how a musical device, texture, can be effectively woven with lyrics to further the script. Johnny is the key player--a leader in philosophy and action among his contemporaries. He even says of himself, "I am young...I'm idealistic. I believe things. I feel things strongly..."The composer has elected to begin the musical embodiment of this philosophy, "we can change the world," with a single voice: a solo. Johnny sings alone. His compatriots join with him in turn and the music's "texture" builds from "thin" (solo) to "thick" (finally with an entire chorus in harmony). The drama of the music grows, as does the group's belief in a young person's ability - and duty - to take action in improving society's conventions and politics.
