Lina enters, and tells Johnny she is fleeing Germany with their children. The argument between Lina and Johnny escalates, and is interrupted with a song, "Love Leaves" sung by Dietrich, who enters the scene, and thus breaks the illusion of reality. A song sang by Lina, and another by Johnny follow - thus, three songs in a single scene, another device used to create a distancing effect.
