Johnny and his new wife, Gertrud (played by the actor who previously portrayed Dietrich), perform a song and dance number in an internment camp in England. Using canes as props, they sing about the plight of other German refugees like themselves, in a vaudeville musical style. Another technique of Epic Theatre is employed here when the actor playing Gertrud transforms into Gertrud on the side of the stage, but still in full view of the audience. The audience is once again reminded that theatre is illusion - they see the actor remove her blond wig, and, by putting on a different set of costumes "become" another character.
