History and Geography Combined Major

Towson University students may choose to combine a major in history with a major in geography. Students who choose this option will be able to complete both majors with a total of 70 units (36 in history and 34 in geography), instead of the 82 units required to complete the two majors separately. Students who are interested in the combined major option should consult with advisors in both departments.

Students in the combined major should see the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning's requirements for required geography courses. In the Department of History, students in the combined major must complete the following:

HIST 300 Introduction to Historical Study

Course must be taken during the junior year or equivalent
Lower-Division History Electives
15 units total (5 classes)
At least one course in pre-modern history

Pre-modern = history prior to 1500
At least one U.S. history survey course

HIST 145, HIST 146, or HIST 148
At least one European history survey course

units

HIST 101, HIST 102, HIST 103, or HIST 105
At least two global history survey courses

"Global" = non-U.S. AND non-European

HIST 110, HIST 111, HIST 117, HIST 118, HIST 121, HIST 122, HIST 135, HIST 160, or HIST 161

Of the four required global history courses (two lower and two upper), students must take at least one course from two of the five sub-regions (Africa, Middle East, Asia, Latin America, World History).
