Towson University students may choose to combine a major in history with a major in geography. Students who choose this option will be able to complete both majors with a total of 70 units (36 in history and 34 in geography), instead of the 82 units required to complete the two majors separately. Students who are interested in the combined major option should consult with advisors in both departments.

Students in the combined major should see the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning's requirements for required geography courses. In the Department of History, students in the combined major must complete the following:

History Department Requirements for History-Geography Combined Majors

Required Course		3 units total (1 class)
HIST 300 Introduction to Historical Study	3 units	Course must be taken during the junior year or equivalent
Lower-Division History Electives		15 units total (5 classes)
At least one course in pre-modern history	3 units	Pre-modern = history prior to 1500
At least one U.S. history survey course	3 units	HIST 145, HIST 146, or HIST 148
At least one European history survey course	3 units	HIST 101, HIST 102, HIST 103, or HIST 105
At least two global history survey courses	6 units	"Global" = non-U.S. AND non-European HIST 110, HIST 111, HIST 117, HIST 118, HIST 121, HIST 122, HIST 135, HIST 160, or HIST 161 Of the four required global history courses (two lower and two upper), students must take at least one course from two of the five sub-regions (Africa, Middle East, Asia, Latin America, World History).
Upper-Division History Electives		24 units total (8 classes)
Two courses in pre-modern history	6 units	Pre-modern = history prior to 1500
One course in U.S. history	3 units
Once course in European history	3 units
Two courses in global history	6 units	"Global" = non-U.S. AND non-European Of the four required global history courses (two lower and two upper), students must take at least one course from two of the five sub-regions (Africa, Middle East, Asia, Latin America, World History).
One Senior History Seminar (HIST 486)	3 units	Course must be taken during the senior year and counts as either U.S., European, or Global History
Two of the Following Geography Electives:		Six units total (2 classes)
GEOG 355: Historical Geography of Urbanization	3 units
GEOG 420: Geography of the United States and Canada	3 units
GEOG 423: Geography of Maryland	3 units
GEOG 424: Historical Geography of Atlantic Canada	3 units
GEOG 427: The Global Economy	3 units
GEOG 431: The Geography of Africa	3 units
GEOG 433: Geography of East Asia	3 units
GEOG 445: Geography of Southeast Asia	3 units
GEOG 447: Geography of the Middle East	3 units
GEOG 448: Conflict In Ireland	3 units
GEOG 451: Geography of Europe	3 units
GEOG 452: Geography of the European Union	3 units
GEOG 453: The Russian Colossus: Historical and Contemporary Geographies of Russia	3 units
GEOG 462: The Two Down-Unders	3 units
