The Towson University history department sponsors the Theta Beta Chapter of the national history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta. Professor Benjamin Zajicek (bzajicek@towson.edu) is currently the faculty advisor.
Phi Alpha Theta’s mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, education, publication, and the discussion of ideas among historians. The group strives to bring students, teachers, writers, and, in general, those with a passion for history together both intellectually and socially. Over the past two years the group has organized volunteer work at the Maryland Historical Society, a cleanup at Bread and Cheese Creek, a book drive, bake sales, and student tutoring.
Applications for membership are offered near the beginning of fall and spring semesters. An initiation ceremony is held each spring to honor the year's initiates and get together with current members. Theta Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at Towson University is open to students who meet the following criteria:
At least 12 hours of history coursework completed at Towson University
Grade point average of 3.0 or higher
History grade point average of at least 3.1 at Towson University
One-time payment of membership fee: $45
Theta Beta’s members collaborate in publishing a yearly journal, Towson’s Journal of Historical Studies. The journal provides a venue for Towson University students to get their work in print. All Towson University students are encouraged to submit papers they have written for history courses at Towson. To submit your paper to the journal, please contact: Chief Editor Lisa Girardi (lgirar1@students.towson.edu) or Faculty Advisor Allaire Stallsmith (astallsmith@towson.edu).
