about the honors college

Message from the Dean

Michael O'Pecko, Ph.D., Interim Dean, Honors College

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Honors College at Towson University.  We are a small community of scholars, both teachers and learners, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge with the goal of developing our full potential to enrich our own lives as well as serve the various communities of which we are a part.

We seek to attain those goals first of all through our curriculum.  A wide range of seminars and courses in fields as diverse as literature, music, robotics, computational

thinking, philosophy, archaeology, and even building synthesizers, all offered in small classes of eighteen or fewer participants, aid the Honors College student to think independently, creatively, critically, and ethically.  Our students are encouraged to learn outside the classroom by participating in internships, engaging in study abroad programs, creating an individual project, or writing a thesis.  Most or even all of this course work can be done in place of, rather than on top of, other University requirements.

We also strive in multiple ways to create a vibrant community for our students.  For those students who live on campus, we have Honors residence halls in Richmond and Newell Halls.  Conveniently located next door to our Honors classrooms and to Newell Dining Hall and just a few steps from the library and “Linthicum Beach,” the popular lawn and gathering spot at the heart of campus, these residences allow Honors students to develop lasting friendships with their peers as they study and relax together.

The community sense is also reinforced by our outside of class activities.  We provide our students with low- or no-cost opportunities to attend professional theater at venues like Baltimore’s Centerstage or Hippodrome theaters, take part in Maryland’s celebrated Renaissance festival at the beginning of the Fall, and take on the faculty in a battle of wits and intelligence in the annual Generation Jeopardy contest.  Students and their families are invited to an Honors College breakfast in early fall, and our graduating seniors are honored at an Honors College Convocation at the end of the spring semester.  Last year, we initiated a peer-mentoring program that linked incoming freshmen to upper-classmen to help make their transition into college successful.

We welcome your interest in the Honors College, whether you are a prospective student, a current student, a parent, an alumnus or alumna, or a friend.  If you have any questions or suggestions for us, please feel free to contact me – I’ll be glad to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Michael O’Pecko, Ph.D.

Interim Dean
