Dr. Fruchtman has taught at Towson University since 1985. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to directing the Law and American Civilization program and serving as Towson’s pre-law advisor, Dr. Fruchtman teaches courses in constitutional law, law and society, and the history of American Political Thought. He has recently been teaching courses on the effect of anti-terrorist policies on civil liberties. Dr. Fruchtman is widely published in the areas of constitutional law and the historical roots of democracy in the United States and Europe. He is an internationally acclaimed scholar on the works of Thomas Paine, about whom he has written or edited three major books. His recent books include Atlantic Cousins: Benjamin Franklin and his Visionary Circle; Thomas Paine, Apostle of Freedom; and The Supreme Court: Rulings on American Government and Society. He was selected to receive Towson University’s President’s Distinguished Service Award in 2002. Dr. Fruchtman will develop and share the teaching of IHSM 643 Homeland Security and Constitutional Rights with Dr. Cynthia Cates.
