Dear Colleagues:
Having recently succeeded Keith Schoppa as President of the Historical Society for Twentieth Century China (HSTCC), I would like to take this chance to announce some important changes and to invite you to consider joining the society at a time of rapid growth and opportunity. The HSTCC, now in its 25th year, is an affiliated organization of both the AAS and the AHA.
Most importantly, the HSTCC and the journal Twentieth Century China have affiliated: the journal is now the official publication of the HSTCC, and membership in HSTCC now includes a subscription to Twentieth Century China, and both the journal and the organization are benefiting from this arrangement to help scholars find appropriate venues for their work, and to help the journal continue to receive high quality submissions.
In addition to its support of the journal, the HSTCC is active in promoting exchange among scholars throughout the world through conferences and workshops. The bi-annual conference rotates among Asia, North America, and Europe, and after successful meetings in Singapore in 2006 and Honolulu last June, we expect to convene next in Europe in the spring of 2010. Many of the papers presented at past conferences have yielded important publications, including journal articles and edited volumes with major university presses, and the meetings never fail to develop important professional and personal relationships.
The HSTCC is also supporting a new initiative to provide limited funding to support workshops, ideally small gatherings that will bring scholars together who might not otherwise have the opportunity to exchange their work. The HSTCC is soliciting proposals for these workshops. More details on this initiative will follow in a future announcement.
For 25 years, the HSTCC has encouraged and supported scholars of modern Chinese history, politics, and society to share work and exchange ideas. If you work on any aspect of China, from the late Qing to the present, I urge you to consider joining the organization. Graduate students, particularly, may find this a valuable forum in which to develop their research agenda. More information is available through the website (http://www.towson.edu/hstcc/) or by contacting me (jcarter@sju.edu).
With all best wishes for a successful academic year,
Jay Carter
