The Historical Society for 20th Century China (HSTCC) is an organization dedicated to scholarly interchange about modern China. Founded in 1983, the HSTCC has sponsored and co-organized almost a dozen symposia, and numerous panels at national meetings of the AAS and the AHA. The Society is affiliated with both the Association for Asian Studies and the American Historical Association.

Membership Publications (See HSTCC directory for authors’ addresses) Winberg Chai (Univ. of Wyoming) has an article, "Relations between the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan: A Chronological Survey with Documents," published in Asian Affairs (Summer 1999). Free copies of the article are available to HSTCC members upon request to the author. Thomas Kampen (Berlin, Germany) has published his book, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and the Evolution of the Chinese Communist Leadership (Copenhagen: Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, 1999). Zhai Qiang (Auburn Univ. at Montgomery). His book, China and the Vietnam Wars, 1950-1975 will be published in March by the University of North Carolina Press.
CONFERENCES in 2001 HSTCC and Hong Kong Baptist University will hold an international conference on "State Building in 20th Century China" in Hong Kong on 7-9 June, 2001. Another joint meeting, in Beijing with Beida, is also being planned. The HSTCC Board is now working on the details of the meetings and will provide more information later.

HSTCC has negotiated with the conference hotel for a special accommodation package. For 3 nights and 2 lunches, it will be approximately US$130.50 for a double room (2 persons), or US$224.50 for a single room (1 person). At the 1998 Annual Meeting, the membership approved a new dues structure: (1) Regular - $25 per year; $60 for a 3-year membership. (2) Student - $10 per year; $25 for a 3-year membership. of the April HSTCC Business Meeting
Minutes of the General Meeting of the Historical Society for 20th Century China. The annual meeting of the Historical Society for 20th Century China (HSTCC) was held in the Regis Room of Boston Marriott Copley Place at the Association for Asian Studies, on 13 March, 1999 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. President Ka-che Yip presided over the meeting. 1. Minutes of the 28 March, 1998 general meeting were moved and seconded for approval. They were approved by the membership. The Financial Statement of 1998-1999 was moved and seconded for approval. It was approved by the membership. The balance (as of 13 March 1999) was $1,264.07. 2. President Yip reported that thanks to the effort of Vice-President David Barrett who has begun to institute a system of regular membership dues collection, HSTCC is in much better financial shape. A number of members have taken advantage of the new 3-year membership option. The possibility of credit card payment by members was discussed but was deemed not feasible at this time. 3. HSTCC-University of Venice Conference: Preparations for the international conference on AThe Role of the Republican period in Twentieth Century China: Reflections and Reconsiderations@ from 30 June to 3 July are well underway under the leadership of Professor Guido Samarani of the University of Venice. Dr. Laura De Giorgi of the University of Venice who attended the annual meeting reported on the tentative program and local arrangements. She indicated that 40-45 international scholars from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia have been invited to make presentations. Registration will take place on 30 June. For the first two days, the conference will be held at the Giorgio Cini Foundation, while the meeting on 3 July will be held at the campus of the University of Venice. Participants are housed in the University Guesthouse. The membership thanked Dr. De Giorgi for her report and for the excellent job she and Professor Samarani are doing in organizing the program. 4. HSTCC-SWCAS Joint Meeting: The HSTCC joint meeting with the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies will be held at Southwest Texas State University, San Marco on 21-23 October. President Yip and Professor Marilyn Levine are working with Professor Joseph Yick, President of SWCAS on the program. Professor Levine will also be directing an outreach program on Vietnam in conjunction with the conference program. The membership was urged to submit panels/papers to Professor Levine. To encourage graduate student participation, HSTCC has set aside travel subsidies for graduate student members who will be presenting papers at the conference. 5. Professor Levine=s Report: Professor Levine reported on the HSTCC Roundtable entitled, AChanging Perceptions of the Sino-Japanese War, 1937-1945,@ at the ICAS Conference at Leiden on 26 June, 1998. The Roundtable was a success and HSTCC also held a meeting to discuss business and recruit new members. |
