In the March 1996 issue of The
Society for Philosophy and Geography Newsletter, the following sentence can be found on page seven:
“Members are encouraged to organize sessions and meetings under the auspices of the SPG.” This notice prompted SPG members Gary Backhaus and John Murungi to co-organize a SPG conference. Due to the success of that first conference,
Backhaus and Murungi have created what has now become an annual tradition. The Sixth Annual International Conference was held under the auspices of the The Geophilia Society. Beginning in 2005, the International Association for
the Study of Environment, Space, and Place co-sponsored the annual conferences.
