Valvano's Hat Trick Caps Win Over
Maryland Tuesday, February 17 |
Senior forward Christian Valvano (Randolph, N.J.) registered his second career three-goal game and paced the Towson Tigers (16-12-2) to victory in the consolation game of the Crabpot over a familiar ECHA foe, the Maryland Terrapins. The 9-4 victory featured three power play goals as well as a beautiful shorthanded score by freshman forward Ryan Larkin (Oakland, N.J.). Valvano, who entered the game with 14 assists but only one goal on the ledger, gave the Tigers the lead early on, converting a nice set-up by Brian Furlong (Pelham, N.Y.). The pair connected again for the first goal of the second period, this time with the man advantage. Finally, Valvano sealed his hat trick on a partial breakaway late in the third period. In game one of the Crabpot, the Tigers were downed by the UMBC Retrievers by the score of 4-0. The following afternoon, the Retrievers defeated Navy 7-4 to nab their first ever Crabpot Championship. Next up for the Tigers is their season finale vs. Penn State-Berks this Friday at 8:30 pm at Ice World as their game the following day at Penn State-Berks has been canceled. The game will be broadcast on Herb FM at Live365.com, airing on Saturday February 21 at 12 pm. For more information about Towson Tigers hockey, skate on the web to www.towson.edu/icehockey. High Five: Tigers Roll Villanova For
Fifth Straight Win Wednesday, February 11 |
With the Towson Tigers (15-11-2, 6-3-1) clinging to a precarious one goal lead and killing off a penalty six minutes into the third period, senior forward Bobby Plant (Annapolis, Md.) won an offensive zone faceoff cleanly back to linemate Mike Emmet (Yonkers, N.Y.) who blasted a slapshot over the shoulder of stunned Villanova netminder Kevin Healey for his team-leading 27th goal of the campaign and the Tigers emerged victorious by the score of 3-1. Right before the draw, Plant showed his senior leadership, communicating to Emmet where to set-up for his one-timer. However, just 25 seconds later, Villanova scored a power play marker and once again pulled within a goal at 2-1. Towson would not relinquish the lead as senior goaltender Darren Delullo (Millersville, Md.) turned aside 14 shots and forward Brian Furlong (Pelham, N.Y.) gave the Tigers some much-needed insurance just past the halfway mark of the period as he scored courtesy of assists by defensemen Matt Doyle (West Chester, Penn.) and D.J. Eden (Pasadena, Md.). With the win, the Tigers clinched the No. 3 seed in the ECHA playoffs and will play the 5pm game on Friday March 6 at Ice Line in West Chester, Penn. The opponent will be either Lehigh or Maryland depending on how Maryland fares in their final league game. The Tigers are now on a season-high five-game winning streak and head to the state capital, Annapolis, this upcoming weekend to defend their Crabpot championship. The Tigers will oppose a familiar foe, the UMBC Retrievers in a Valentine's Day matinee at 4pm. The two teams split a pair of games back in December with each team winning on their home ice by identical scores of 4-2. The Tigers game on Sunday is scheduled to be broadcast on Teamline, with the consolation game scheduled for noon and the championship to be played at 3:30pm. Tigers Mount West Virginia Wednesday, February 4 |
Trailing 4-1 with just under 12 minutes left to play in Friday's match at West Virginia, the Towson Tigers (14-11-2) charged back to tie the score with goals from Mike Emmet (Yonkers, N.Y.), Matt Doyle (West Chester, Penn.), and Bobby Plant (Annapolis, Md.) to force overtime. In the extra frame, Steven Alfano (Crofton, Md.) set up Emmet for the gamewinner, and jubilation ensued as the Tigers stormed the ice surface. Prior to the come-from-behind win, the Tigers had a record of 0-9 on the season when on the wrong end of the score after two periods of play. After the hardfought victory, goaltender Darren Delullo finally was allowed to rest and Greg Valiquette (Towson, Md.) stood between the pipes on Saturday afternoon. His Towson debut was a successful one, as he turned aside 30 shots en route to the Tigers 6-3 victory. The Tigers are now on a season-long four game winning streak. Two Towson players scored their first career goals in the Tigers black and gold on Saturday, freshmen Ryan Larkin (Oakland, N.J.) and Sean Tivnan (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). This Friday, the Tigers travel to Villanova for their ECHA regular season finale, and the game has huge playoff implications for both squads as the Tigers can nail down the No. 3 seed in the playoffs with a win. Tigers Sweep
Villanova And Lehigh Wednesday, January 28 |
Powered by junior forward Mike Emmet's (Yonkers, N.Y.) back-to-back three-point games, the Towson Tigers defeated Villanova 4-3 and Lehigh 4-2. The victories keep the Tigers ensconced in third place in the ECHA with a record of 5-3-1 with one more league game remaining. It was a back-and-forth battle on Saturday night between Villanova and Towson. Villanova led Towson in the ECHA standings by one point, and the game was vital for both squads. Trailing 2-1 in the second period, the Tigers nabbed the lead on a pair of goals by John Trantin (Odenton, Md.) and Emmet. However, Villanova forward Alex Kong tied the game late in the second period and set the stage for a third period where both teams tried to avoid making a mistake which would prove costly. With just under three minutes left in regulation, Emmet took a feed from Bobby Plant (Annapolis, Md.) and gave Towson a lead that they would not relinquish. Sunday afternoon saw the team travel to Lehigh where the Mountain Hawks, who lost to Villanova on Friday by the score of 6-4, were looking to nab their first league victory of the season. Towson edged Lehigh 4-3 on Halloween night and was not looking to engage in another nail-biter. In the latter stages of the second period, Kyle Young (Frederick, Md.) and Emmet scored a pair of goals 36 seconds apart to give the Tigers a two goal advantage, and goaltender Darren Delullo (Millersville, Md.) stopped all twelve shots he faced in the final stanza to give the Tigers the win. This weekend, the Tigers take to the road to tangle with the West Virginia Mountaineers. Firday night's game at 10 pm will be broadcast live on U92, but Saturday afternoon's game at 4:30 pm will not.
