CGIS is a self-supporting, highly qualified professional organization within the Universityís Division of Innovation & Applied Research.
The CGIS vision is to continually expand availability of GIS technology by developing innovative geospatial solutions that serve public, private, entrepreneurial, and community support sectors.
The CGIS mission is to make GIS technology accessible and relevant, and to empower our clients to use our geospatial solutions independently of our assistance. Through professional development, conferences, internships, community outreach, partnerships, and leadership, CGIS works toward building a vibrant GIS ecosystem.
In 1992, under the direction of Dr. John M. Morgan, III, the GIS lab previously established within the Universityís Department of Geography and Environmental Planning became the Center for Geographic Information Sciences (CGIS), a professionally staffed business unit capable of responding to a growing need for applied GIS services.
CGIS is a cohesive team of equals who commit their energy toward collaborative, creative work that results in useful products and services. CGIS staff are proud of the quality of their work, and they believe that the results of their work can and should contribute to the greater good.
CGIS works with proven, industry standard products to provide the services required for enterprise GIS solutions, web mapping and hosting, geospatial analysis and database development, client site support, custom cartography, and GIS training. The CGIS team comprises degreed and certified professionals who consistently deliver their best work to clients and customers and are firmly committed to empowering clients to use GIS technology to its full potential.
Statewide GIS Coordination
Towson University serves as a hub for GIS activities in Maryland by working with agencies at the state, regional, and local level, and through TUgis, the annual statewide GIS conference. CGIS serves as a technical resource to the all-volunteer Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC) and has worked with MSGIC on several National Spatial Data Infrastructure Cooperative Agreement Program projects to coordinate development and delivery of geospatial resources in Maryland, the region, and nationally.
