Membership in Osher is a requirement to register for classes in the fall and spring semesters. Anyone over age 50 is welcome to join Osher as a regular member. Supporting memberships are offered to Towson University faculty and staff of any age.
Course Length and Times
Each semester is divided into two four-week sessions separated by a week with no classes. Some courses are only four weeks in length while others are eight weeks. Classes meet once a week and are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. Classes are one hour and fifteen minutes in length unless stated otherwise in the catalog. Classes are held at 7400 York Road, suite 100 or room 108. For spring 2013, classes are held at the Central Presbyterian Church. Enter the parking lot at 7400 York Road.
Courses are offered in the fields of music, art history, film, literature, religion, philosophy, history, political science, current events and physical science.
Book Clubs and Interest Groups
Osher hosts a non-fiction, a popular fiction, and a literary fiction book club, open to members without charge. Each meets monthly when classes are not in session. A biography book club meets monthly year-round and is open to members without charge. A mystery book club meets four times during the semester. An interest group, "The World We Live In," open to members without charge, discusses contemporary national and international issues, and meets weekly year-round.
There is no required homework, and no grades or credits are issued. People participate for the challenge, stimulation, and love of learning. Faculty members come from local colleges and universities (including Towson University), local art and music institutions, the retired community of university and high school teachers, and also may be Osher members who have teaching skills and expertise in a particular field or area of interest.
A Preview of spring classes is held in January of each year and of fall classes in July. Guests are welcome. For more information about the Previews, please call 410-704-3535 .
