ITROW's NFP Leadership: not for the faint of heart

Morning Address: Ann Stallard

“Evolution:  From Non-Profit to Social Profit – A Formula for the Common Good”

The United States of America has experienced an explosion of non-profit organizations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1 in 8 persons in the USA is employed by a non-profit organization.  These organizations respond to every possible circumstance--education, social welfare, health and the environment. Government tax policies also promote the non-profit sector and volunteerism. Why, given this critical mass of good intentions, do we live in a country with such a low rate of high school graduates (25% do not graduate), financially unstable families (1 in 4 families do no make enough to provide for their children) and unhealthy citizens, especially children (only 1 in 3 are healthy according to the CDC and 49 million have no health insurance.)  We can no longer simply seek to identify and to serve more who have these symptoms. We must dedicate ourselves to finding systemic solutions to these enormous challenges.  We in the non-profit sector must and can inspire hope and create opportunities that will enhance the common good, benefiting not some but all, and in turn strengthen the nation.
