University Relations

The Department of University Relations helps to fashion and promote Towson University's image and seeks to position the university within the local, national and international higher education communities.

The department functions as the university's news bureau, serving as the primary source of information about the institution, its people and its programs. University Relations serves as the initial contact for reporters, producers and other media representatives seeking information about Towson or wishing to interview faculty/staff experts.

University Relations' writers/editors provide editorial oversight for hundreds of university publications, including departmental newsletters and program brochures, special events promotional materials (programs, fliers, posters and invitations), handbooks, viewbooks, the Undergraduate Catalog and the Graduate Catalog. They also produce Towson, the university's alumni magazine, with a circulation of more than 100,000.

University Relations also coordinates the services of the university photographers, whose work appears in every major campus publication. The department is also frequently “the voice of TU” through the services provided by its switchboard services unit.

Should an emergency arise, University Relations staff assume a crisis-management communications role. The department develops and distributes the University's Emergency Closing Policy in consultation with the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance.
